Milano Unica
Special Exhibition Honors Gian Paolo Barbieri
For the 43rd edition of Milano Unica, taking place July 7–9, 2026, the Italian textile trade show will focus on the connection between fashion, culture, and creativity.
In collaboration with the Fondazione Gian Paolo Barbieri ETS, it is presenting the exhibition “Gian Paolo Barbieri. The Radical Elegance” at the exhibition center, thereby honoring one of the most important fashion photographers of the 20th century.
Curated by Stefano Fadda and Antonella Matarrese, the exhibition traces Barbieri’s extraordinary visual language through works spanning three decades. With his precise aesthetic and flair for staging, he has shaped the international fashion scene since the 1960s and accompanied the global rise of “Made in Italy.” Among those who posed for his camera were Valentino Garavani, Giorgio Armani, Krizia, and Dolce & Gabbana, as well as figures from film and culture such as Claudia Cardinale, Rudolf Nureyev, Christopher Lambert, and Ewan McGregor.
For Milano Unica, Barbieri’s work embodies the values that also distinguish the exhibiting textile and accessory companies: excellence in craftsmanship, innovative spirit, creative precision, and the ability to combine tradition with a forward-looking vision. His photographs thus build a bridge between cultural heritage and industrial creativity.
The exhibition is divided into two sections. While the first features iconic portraits from the 1960s through the early 1990s, the second combines Barbieri’s best-known fashion photographs with the display tables showcasing the Milano Unica trends for Fall/Winter 2027/28. This creates a direct dialogue between photographic vision, material innovation, and textile research.
The exhibition is part of the cultural program surrounding MU Tendenze and also takes up the theme of this year’s trade show, “MU IS PUNK!” Here, punk is understood not as a style but as an attitude: independent thinking, a spirit of experimentation, and a willingness to challenge conventions. It is precisely this combination of creative freedom and the highest standards of quality that is intended to underscore the capabilities of the Italian textile industry.
“Gian Paolo Barbieri. The Radical Elegance” will be on view from July 7 to 9, 2026, in the MU Tendenze Sostenibilità Area in Hall 3 at Fiera Milano Rho.
