Tradition as the Origin

Tradition as the Origin
There’s hardly anyone better suited to discuss the current heritage revival in menswear than Franz Grasegger.

For decades, the Grasegger workshop has been regarded as the epitome of Bavarian clothing culture—deeply rooted in tradition yet open to contemporary interpretations. Grasegger sees this very aspect as the strength of the current zeitgeist: “For us, tradition is not a trend, but the origin.” Traditional dress has always been the foundation—originally designed for functionality, later reinterpreted for fashion. Today, the focus is on translating this past into the present.

He isn’t surprised that heritage currently plays such a major role in menswear. In times of social uncertainty, he says, there is a growing longing for stability, familiar imagery, and durable products. The key, he notes, is not to present traditional influences in a nostalgic way. “The interpretations must remain vibrant, radiate joy, and convey a sense of lightness.” This creates an understanding of heritage that does not remain stuck in the past but draws new energy from it.
