Vaude
Emissions Cut in Half Five Years Ahead of Schedule
On Earth Overshoot Day, Vaude is setting an example: The outdoor company has reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by 51 percent compared to 2019, thereby achieving its science-based climate goal for 2030 five years ahead of schedule.
At the same time, revenue grew by 19 percent compared with the base year—an indication that economic growth and emissions reduction can be decoupled.
In 2019, Vaude committed to halving its emissions by 2030 as part of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). According to the latest carbon footprint report, CO₂e emissions fell from around 27,500 to approximately 13,500 metric tons. “Our experience shows that consistent action can make a difference. Together, we can change course,” says Managing Director Dr. Antje von Dewitz. The supply chain makes the largest contribution to reducing emissions. Together with its production partners, Vaude has driven the expansion of renewable energy and energy efficiency measures. Emissions from energy consumption in production have fallen by 71 percent since 2019.
The company is also focusing on transformation when it comes to materials: About 45 percent of its current products already consist of at least 85 percent recycled or bio-based materials. This has enabled the company to reduce product-related emissions by 31 percent compared to 2019. By 2030, this share is expected to rise to at least 90 percent of all products. At the company’s Tettnang site, emissions from the vehicle fleet and heating systems have been reduced by 81 percent since 2019. Three-quarters of the passenger car fleet is now electric, and the electricity is sourced entirely from renewable energy.
For Vaude, achieving its target ahead of schedule marks another milestone on the path to Net Zero 2040. “Halving our emissions shows that climate protection and economic activity go hand in hand. At the same time, we know that the path to Net Zero remains challenging,” said Jan Lorch, Head of Sales & Sustainability.
