Javier Goyeneche

Was wirklich gut ist.

ENGLISCH VERSION

Consumption is always a statement!

For 10 years now Javier Goyeneche has been fighting for a more sustainable and responsible future of fashion. With Style in Progress, the founder of Ecoalf spoke about individual responsibility, his love for the „Upcycling the Oceans“-Project and the role of digitization in the sustainable transformation of fashion.
You have come a long way with Ecoalf. The brand will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2021. What were the greatest challenges along the way?

It’s been an incredible journey to this day. And especially at the beginning a kind of journey into the unknown. Because almost everything that defines Ecoalf’s DNA, and a lot of it seems almost self-evident today, first had to be developed or found back then. Fabrics, sustainable production, the entire supply chain ultimately had to be rethought. Most of all, we had to fight passionately to create awareness. Ten years ago it was a niche topic at best and certainly not a success factor. Fortunately, that has changed. Today nobody questions the urgent need for this transformation.

And what would you describe as the most important achievements of this first decade?

There is really a lot that I look at with great gratitude. But if I personally have to highlight one thing, it is the „Upcycling the Oceans“-Project, in which over 3,000 fishermen in more then 40 ports are involved today. Growing really fast. All of them actively protecting the marine ecosystem. And in parallel their own economic basis. This is an important aspect for me. It only works with the people, not against them. And in general we were able build awareness. This really means a lot to me.

The extraordinary year 2020 changed a lot, turned our business upside down and rearranged it. Also in a positive sense. Would you agree that ambitions to transform fashion into a healthier, more responsible, and more sustainable industry have received a major boost?

No doubt. And without wanting to be misunderstood, the pandemic has brought many people’s view of society, nature and also individual responsibility to another level. Blue skies, dolphins in the canals of Venice … those were powerful images. And this changed mindset will help a lot.

But now it’s a matter of putting these emotional insights into practice. Because the fact that fashion industry is far from being sustainable and resource-efficient has not changed much yet. Ultimately, it’s not about organic cotton or recycling, but about a business model and a supply chain that is built on overproduction and overconsumption.

True…getting people excited about the idea of more conscious consumer behavior is one thing … fulfilling expectations that have been awakened is the other. I’m talking about trust and transparancy. What needs to be tackled in the coming years?

The challenge is to really accelerate this transformation. Because it has to be clear to everyone that we don’t have endless time. The earth will not grant it to us.

Education is the key. And the young generation, the children, are the key. It’s not just about which planet we leave to our kids but also which kids we leave to our planet. I often meet great, committed young people who are ready to take action. But are they also ready to forego buying 20 cheap t-shirts? Understanding your own contribution is crucial. Consumption is always a statement. And now more than ever it is about making the right statement.

Technology and digitization are often viewed very critically or negatively, especially by environmentally-oriented social groups. But isn’t technology and also science the key to transformation?

I have to emphasize again: We need to go faster! And that’s why the big players in the fashion industry in particular have to go faster. We at Ecoalf for sure can make some noise. But what we need is a general movement. Only then can it succeed. And of course the intelligent use of technology within the entire supply chain plays a decisive role.

It’s the devil is in the details: online retail has revolutionized the markets and given consumers unimagined freedom. But looking at the downsides in Germany alone, over 500 million parcels with ordered goods have been returned in 2019. An ecological and economic disaster. And of course a challenge, specially for a brand like Ecoalf. How do you deal with it?

When it comes to responsible consumption, awareness plays a crucial role. We need to educate and motivate consumers to avoid returns. In our Online Shop we communicate this under “Think responsibly, Act accordingly” return policy.

We are also looking into new sustainable partners, like Koiki, who do the last mile by walking or biking. Currently our return rate is 20%. Which is really good. But still not good enough. So we continue to improve with the support of intelligent technology.

We´ve integrated SIZOLUTION to personalize the shopping experience and reduce returns as effectiv as possible.

Why did you choose SIZOLUTION?

As our online business continues to grow, we are working to improve our service while reducing the negative impact on the environment. As a cosequence returns are a big focus for us.  Sizolution offers a lot more than just a precise size and fit recommendation. I believe they take a broader look at the actual challenge and the future.

Could you explain this further?

Sizolution has managed to combine the three decisive factors in one extremely simple solution for the costumers

  • The exact determination of the sizes and fits of the garments.
  • The exact and convenient determination of the customer’s individual body measurements.
  • The Knowledge of personal style and fit preferences.

And all this in a very user friendly way which is crucial in digital.  With this service, we want to significantly reduce our online returns and at the same time increase customer confidence and thus the conversion rate.

For example?

Personalization of products on the one hand and the customer’s shopping experience on the other is becoming a very important success factor.  Improving the user exprience by offering a personlized service that collects your sizes to ensure the specific products fits. This is an important step in sustainable transformation, a combination of smart personalization and responsible consumption.

Sustainable fashion still is fashion. How important are design and product quality for a breakthrough on a really broad scale?

Design and quality are key! It all starts with sophisticated fabrics and excellent eco design, making it easy to recycle the garment once it reaches the end of its lifescyle.  High product quality is a basic requirement for sustainability. Innovation is the tool allowing us to create solutions for the great environmental and social challenges we’re facing in the fashion industry. All of our innovation proposals have to be linked to design that is in turn linked to the values of our brand – basically a clean, timeless and essential design. The honesty of timeless design and the transformation of ideas into reality are at the center of Ecoalf’s mindset and give us the energy to always look for new perspectives and ways of conceiving our products in an innovative, exciting but always sustainable manner

I would like to continue your thoughts on the future of our industry … would you dare to take a look at the next 10 years of Ecoalf?

Ahead of us there is a time full of opportunities and at the same time of greatest responsibility. My optimism that a more conscious and at the same time successful economy can establish itself is strong. But bold decisions must be made for this. As always when you want to break new ground. Whenever we at Ecoalf made a decision that was good for the planet, it was also good for the company. This strengthens us tremendously in our ambition to establish Ecoalf as a global brand of a new kind.

At the same time we are also very ambitious with the Ecoalf Foundation. We want to expand the Ocean Project to the entire Mediterranean and have over 12,000 fishermen as partners and ambassadors by 2025. To promote the idea of shared responsibility for the world’s oceans together with them and to make a very concrete contribution is a wonderful challenge.
